PIC : OF : THE : WEEK
21 Feb 2010

Joy, Julian and I visited Randy and Wynn in Puerto Vallarta for a long weekend. Their place is amazing... right on the beach (5th floor) and walking distance to the leatherback turtle rescue hut. This conservationist group walks the beaches every night bringing in all the turtle eggs they can find (beach combers, dog walkers, sand castle builders... all have a habit of crushing the eggs. The baby turtles then hatch in their custody. At day 2, they release the babies onto the beach at sunset where they make their way into the surf. Somehow, they are able to return to the same beach and lay their eggs when they are full grown adults (often decades later). I like beachfront condos but it makes you question the human impact on other species (these turtles would very quickly die out if it weren't for the conservationists; there just wouldn't be enough babies surviving each year to continue the circle of life). Here are some more pics from the trip.
